INTRO: Neil Marten, a member of the British Parliament, was once giving a group of his constituents a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament. During the course of the visit, the group happened to meet Lord Hailsham, then lord chancellor, wearing all the regalia of his office. Hailsham recognized Marten among the group and cried, “Neil!” Not daring to question or disobey the “command,” the entire band of visitors promptly fell to their knees!
This text is the conclusion to the sermon Jesus preached just after the call of His twelve disciple. There are similarities between this sermon and The Sermon On The Mount (Matthew 5-7), Warren Wiersbe stated this was the disciple’s ordination service, and like any great Preacher Jesus concludes His sermon with a call to action. We must apply Jesus’ words to our lives, This is called Application!
This sermon does not teach what must be done to enter the Kingdom of God, but what is expected of one who is already in the Kingdom of God.
The Message (Logos) is what Jesus preached the content is as follows, (According to W.W.) 1. Possessions: Though you are poor don’t envy the rich or long to be like them, it is sin to trust in riches over God or to think you are a special person because you are rich. Character is more important than possessions. 2. People: Jesus taught to treat others as you would want them to treat you (31) (Show love to even those who hate you, pray for those who mistreat you, and give generously) and to be merciful just as your Father is merciful (36) (Do not judge others to condemnation but pardon them for their faults against you… involves forgiveness and asking for forgiveness.)
